Many “conventional” dairy farm cows can be treated with something called recombinant bovine somatotropin (aka rbST). This rbST is a GMO. It is a version of a naturally occurring hormone in milk-producing animals that stimulates production. Yes, it’s made in a lab.
Today, many large corporate dairies inject rbST into their dairy cows to make them produce more milk. So in turn they make more money. Doing so increases the cows risk for the painful inflammation called mastitis, and other bad, hurtful things. This is when antibiotics are administered and gets into our milk production – another potential health risk from having rbST in our milk supply. Some researchers believe it increases human levels of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), which is linked to cancer in humans (read more about this here).
